The National Mikey Powell Memorial Family Fund (NMPMFF), incubated by Catalyst, are proud to present their second annual report of activities between 2022 and 2023. The 1 September 2023 marked 8 years since the NMPMFF was founded, and just over 3 years since their first ever funding round.

NMPMFF Founder, Tippa Naphtali, said; "As is the case for many small charities and community organisations, the last year has put up almost as many challenges as it has seen in positive developments and ventures for the NMPMFF. This report will cover the most significant of the positive, whilst also being realistic about some of the challenges and hurdles ahead.”

The Fund is the first national resource of its kind for those affected by deaths and abuses in state custody, making small grants available for families and their campaign groups across the UK to provide practical domestic assistance, to further the work of their own campaigns or assist them to engage in local, regional or national campaigns, events and initiatives.

A key supporter of the NMPMFF, Ken Fero of award winning Migrant Media previously said;

"The public awareness and support after the killing of George Floyd [in 2020] had strengthened this initiative which improves the lives of families impacted by state violence in the UK. We support this important grassroots initiative and urge others to join. When the state fails us, the people must act in unity".

In April 2021 the NMPMFF announced ambitious plans for the future. This report provides details of what the Fund was able to achieve with the grant aid, donations and voluntary input received, as well as several significant developments over the past year, and continued work against their 5-year plan and other developments including;

  • Core and project funding and donations that were raised
  • Their mix of income generation and appeals for new donors to support our work
  • Update on the Annual Gala Dinner & Awards initiative
  • Assistance to The People's Tribunal on Police Killings in delivering a national call out for involvement to any families whose loved ones have died at the hands of the police or after contact with the police
  • A feature on our event first family fun day event which took place in Manchester on 27 May 2023 and was a free family only entertainment, socialising and pampering event for those affected by deaths in custody
  • The 2022 launch of the NMPMFF Holiday Scheme Initiative supporting children, young people and families, with assistance from the United Families & Friends Campaign(UFFC) and Migrant Media
  • Updates on grants and gift schemes awarded to affected families

The report also sets out the NMPMFF's income & expenditure for 2022-2023, their forward thinking Work Plan and a summary of various partners, collaborators and donors.

The Fund has already made a practical difference to numerous families and their campaign groups that need financial and wellbeing support during their long struggles for justice lasting decades in many cases.

It is the NMPMFF's absolute and undivided commitment that this work should be continued indefinitely, and will maintain our momentum in this respect.
